Nach sechsjähriger Schaffenspause meldet sich Master’s Monkeys („Under The Shade Of A Pine” (2009), „Movie Theater“ (2013)) mit „The Care & Feeding of the Monkey“ zurück. Das neue Album beinhaltet 12 Songs, yeah, „Twelve Monkeys“ wäre auch ein guter Titel gewesen. 6 Remixe greifen die Monkey-Klassiker auf, u. a. der Radio-Hit „Over & Over Again“ oder das Spoken-Word-Stück „Roll On Through Saturday Night“. 6 Songs sind brandneue Kompositionen und never-before-heard.
Musikalisch und inhaltlich bleibt sich Master’s Monkeys treu. In gewohnt skurriler und eigenwilliger Manier wird es sowohl wild („May the Devil Take the Rest“, „Back Again & Strong“) und düster („Forcing You“), oder auch sexy wie bei dem Blues Song „Don’t Blame Me“. Für besinnliche Momente sorgen Songs wie „Prisoner of Wishes“ oder „You Never Come Back“.
Seit 2005 existiert das „etwas andere“ musikalische Projekt von Komponist und Texter Paul ‘Aka’ Kessler. Als Band tritt Master’s Monkeys mit wechselnden Besetzungen und einer außergewöhnlich großen Bandbreite an verschiedenen Instrumenten in Erscheinung. Die Musik ist oft stark von Blues beeinflusst und vermischt sich mit anderen musikalischen Stilen wie Rock, Folk, Hip-Hop und Jazz. Wichtige musikalische Einflüsse sind Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Jack White und Neil Young.
Neben der Musik sucht Master’s Monkeys die Nähe zu visueller Kunst und Philosophie. So gibt es auch diesmal ein wunderbares Artwork, geschaffen von Master’s Monkeys’ In-House Künstlerin Silke Carthaus.
Das philosophische Grundthema tritt im Songtext von „God’s Monkeys“ deutlich hervor: “If a God created this world, he made us his monkeys“. Master’s Monkeys bewegt sich fernab von Politik und stellt grundsätzlich jede Form von Religion in Frage und macht Musik für weltoffene Musikliebhaber jenseits der ausgetretenen Pfade des Mainstreams.
“Master’s Monkeys” gehören bislang zu den erfolgreichsten NRW-Bands in den ausgeschriebenen WDR2-Wettbewerben. Schon mit zwei Songs konnten sie jeweils dreimal den Wochengewinn verbuchen, das Maximum in diesem Voting. “Over and over again” und “Little Prostitute” hießen die beiden Songs aus dem Album “Under the Shade of a Pine”. Die Band um Paul Aka Kessler war im Finale um den Auftritt beim WDR2 Tag in Nettetal.

After a six-year break Master’s Monkeys (“Under The Shade Of A Pine” (2009), “Movie Theater” (2013)) returns with “The Care & Feeding of the Monkey”. The new album contains 12 songs. Yeah, “Twelve Monkeys” would also have been a good title. 6 remixes pick up the Monkey classics, among others the radio hit “Over & Over Again” or the spoken word track “Roll On Through Saturday Night”. 6 songs are brand new compositions and never-before-heard.
Master’s Monkeys remains true to himself in terms of music and content. In the usual bizarre and idiosyncratic manner it gets wild (“May the Devil Take the Rest”, “Back Again & Strong”) and dark (“Forcing You”), which is also sexy like the blues song “Don’t Blame Me”. Songs like “Prisoner of Wishes” or “You Never Come Back” provide for contemplative moments. Since 2005 the “somewhat different” musical project of composer and lyricist Paul ‘Aka’ Kessler exists. Master’s Monkeys appears as a band with changing line-ups and an extraordinarily wide range of different instruments.
The music is often strongly influenced by blues and mixes with other musical styles like rock, folk, hip hop and jazz. Important musical influences are Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Jack White and Neil Young.
In addition to music, Master’s Monkeys seeks proximity to visual art and philosophy. So this time there is a wonderful artwork, created by Master’s Monkeys’ in-house artist Silke Carthaus.
The basic philosophical theme clearly appears in the lyrics of “God’s Monkeys”: “If a God created this world, he made us his monkeys”. Master’s Monkeys moves far away from politics and basically questions every form of religion and makes music for cosmopolitan music lovers beyond the well-trodden paths of the mainstream.
“Master’s Monkeys” are among the most successful NRW bands in the WDR2 competitions to date. Already with two songs they could win three times a week, the maximum in this voting. “Over and over again” and “Little Prostitute” were the names of the two songs from the album “Under the Shade of a Pine”.
